Custom Cast Iron Stairs
Cast iron stair treads, risers and landing panels for monumental stairs
Custom Cast Iron Stair Treads, Risers and Landing Panels
Richmond Iron makes custom cast iron treads, risers and landing panels for installation by local steel fabricators. Custom cast iron stair treads are self-supporting, slip-resistant and economical. Express your creativity with bespoke bas-relief designs or max out the engineering of a floating staircase with thin ductile iron treads.
Cast Iron Stair Treads
Custom cast iron treads are an economical way to elevate the appearance of a staircase. Cast iron stair treads are engineered to be self-supporting and slip-resistant with custom bas-relief design. Maximize your engineering and your creativity with custom cast iron treads from Richmond Iron.
Cast Iron Stair Risers
Cast iron risers are an opportunity to dress up a stair case and glass prisms or open work to let the light in. Richmond Iron offers three different designs for glass prisms and infinite possibilities for open work designs. Cast iron risers are not structural and can be maximized for aesthetic effect with open work, glass prisms and bas-relief decoration.
Glass Prism Lights for Treads and Risers
Cast iron stair treads, risers and landing panels can be made with glass prism lights for backlighting or a light permeable staircase. Richmond Iron has developed a comprehensive custom design workflow to design and engineer cast iron treads, risers and landing panels for completely custom arrangements of glass prisms optimizing cost, light permeability and rigidity. With three different glass options available, architects have incredible flexibility with lighted cast iron from Richmond Iron.
Three Standard Options for Glass Prisms
2" dia. Pebbled Top Prism Glass
2 inch dia. prism glass with domed pebbled top. The pebbled surface adds scatters backlighting and adds brilliance.
2" dia. Flat Top Prism Glass
2 inch dia. prism glass with flat smooth top. Flat top glass installed flush for a walkable surface.
1.75" dia. Flat Top Prism Glass
1.75 inch dia. prism glass with smooth top. Flat top glass installed flush for a walkable surface.
All the the stair treads, risers and landing panels from Richmond Iron are made custom to order. Every staircase has a slightly different rise, run, width and detailing, but many features and styles are typical and past projects can inform new designs.

Black Iron Patina Finish, No Paint, VOC Free
Natural rust forms a hard protective adherent scale on cast iron, it is the perfect coating for cast iron, but first it is orange then brown. Black Max to the rescue! Black Max from Rhomar Industries converts rust to a black patina polymer shield. By force rusting new virgin castings and then applying Black Max rust converter, new cast iron treads, risers and landings can have a natural black iron patina that is VOC free, attractive and durable.
Black Max is a tough patina finish, but relies on the depth and age of the original forced rust and may change over time if exposed to harsh conditions. Unlike paint Black Max can be reapplied at any time to refresh the finish and blacken late blooming rust. Black Max is water based, odor free, quickly drying and can take traffic shortly after application. Our cast iron is 100% recycled content, save the planet, skip the paint.
Custom Engineered Cast Iron Stairs
Cast iron treads, risers and landing panels from Richmond Iron come with design and engineering support direct from the foundry. This means you have superior metallurgical options like ASTM certified Gray Iron or Ductile Iron and 3D CAD design of stair treads, risers and panels. FEA and structure calculations by Hunter Mechanical Design, LLC.
Foundry Patterns for Custom Castings
Richmond Iron makes foundry patterns for cast iron stair treads, risers and panels using 3D CAD/CAM software and CNC milling for rapid foundry tooling and casting.
Ductile Iron Advantage
Ductile iron has the strength of steel and the low cost of cast iron. It is a miracle metal and can be used to solve engineering problems of cast iron staircases. Delicate decorative elements, structural hardware and large spans are possible with ductile iron.
